Healthy Brain Diet – Eating Wisely for a Healthier Brain

Healthy Brain Diet – Eating Wisely for a Healthier Brain
People have been paying too much attention to losing weight all this time, but are they investing even just a portion of their interests in promoting optimum mental health and intelligence? Although, it is a healthy advocacy to be physically fit, we still need to remember that our brain is part of our body. Hence, we cannot really attain such fit stature without taking our mental health and intelligence into consideration. It is on this pursuit, that the Healthy Brain Diet comes into the scene.
Dr. Alan Logan, a naturopathic physician and member of the Harvard Medical School’s Mind-Body Medical Institute wrote the book, “The Brain Diet: The Connection between Nutrition, Mental Health, And Intelligence.” This is the second edition of his bestselling book, The Brain Diet, and given that this is an expanded version, you can expect to read tons of information about the updates on how nutrition affects brain function and mentality. In addition, the Healthy Brain Diet also includes some recommendations on how to eat for a healthy brain, as well as information about nutritional supplements that can cause positive effects to the functions of our brain.
Being rational individuals, we really have control over our bodies and it is under our prerogative whether to follow a path that leads to a healthier life or a path that leads us to the opposite direction. Speaking about our mental health, we really have the power to improve our current mental status. If you feel like your mental capacities have dried up through the years of being mentally dormant, then it is high time that you dive into the sea of infinite positive possibilities brought about by embracing a healthy brain diet. As they say, it is never late to change our old ways to make way for new and better ones. Dr. Logan, in his book, emphasizes our human capacity to improve our over-all health, which includes our mental health. He states that we can improve the quality of our life by supporting our cognitive functions because it is in having an improved cognition that we can enhance our capacity to learn and be creative, which in the long run can improve the quality of our life. He says that this is possible by ensuring that our diet contains enough amounts of foods and nutrients that nourish our brains.
In addition, a healthy brain diet is also efficient in increasing intelligence and in reducing the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.
Dr. Logan also speaks about the most important dietary factor that plays a huge role in changing one’s psychological condition, and it is none other than the omega-3 fatty acids. He says that our brain is composed of 60% fats, and if we don’t start to deposit enough of these good fats as early as now, then we are putting ourselves at risk of having mental disease sooner or later.
Moreover, aside from eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, Dr. Logan also says that fruits and vegetables with vibrant colors are also scientifically proven to exert protective efforts on our brains. The Healthy Brain Diet also recommends that we use cooking methods such as steaming, boiling and poaching over higher-temperature techniques like frying, grilling, and baking. The reason behind this is that when foods are exposed to too much heat, there is an increase production in the AGEs or advanced glycation end-products, which are chemicals that contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation that can negatively affect the brain and cardiovascular functions.
Foods to Eat
  • Foods high in omega-3 fats include sardines, salmon, flaxseeds and walnuts.
  • Anchovies, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, black sesame seeds, black beans, red beans, kale, spinach, red pepper, tomato, soy milk, low-fat yoghurt
  • Goat cheese, turkey, chicken, egg whites, grass-fed beef
  • Olive oil, garlic, turmeric
  • Green tea
  • Purple foods like blueberries, acai, plums, grapes and eggplant because of their high antioxidant properties called anthocyanins
Foods to Avoid
  • Red meat or limit to a maximum of one serving per week
  • Simple sugars and refined carbohydrates
  • Alcohol
  • Limit the intake of safflower, sunflower and soybean oils
Pros
  • The diet doesn’t only improve brain health, but also general health
  • Also recommends having a regular exercise in order to improve one’s sense of well-being
  • Gives detailed information on the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in brain health
  • Helps in preventing and/or managing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Reduces the risk of having Alzheimer’s disease
  • Includes a list of foods that are high in AGEs, which are known to be damaging to the brain
  • Gives recommendations about nutritional supplements that can improve brain health
  • Includes recipes that are not only healthy, but also delicious
  • Easy-to-understand
Cons
  • It has no meal plans
  • Weight loss isn’t the priority; hence, you can expect to lose weight in a longer span of time
  • It doesn’t have specific exercise guidelines
  • Readers who prefer to have a much structured diet plan may find the book less interesting
The Brain Diet: The Connection between Nutrition, Mental Health, and Intelligence is a book that is specially made for individuals who care about his or her overall health. The book emphasizes on how it is very much possible for us to improve our brain function by eating brain-nourishing foods and avoiding those that contain properties that are damaging to it.

Younique UK Launch: Makeup And Incredible Business Opportunity

Image of the charm for Younique Presenters in the UKYounique will soon launch into the UK, hopefully late summer/early fall of this year, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it! There is already so much interest and excitement over the Younique products over in the UK and we aren’t even there yet.
I’m currently working with a few UK ladies that are interested in becoming Younique Founding Presenters. They are pre-building their teams and learning as much information as they can so that when it comes time for the official Younique UK launch date, they will be ready. I love that there is no time being wasted; they are just diving in and soaking up as much as they can.

Preparing For Younique To Launch Into The UK

Using this time before the Younique UK launch to pre-build teams is such a great thing to do. It shortens the learning curve since there is so much information that can be learned between now and then. It helps the future founding presenters of the UK really get to know all of our amazing products and just how versatile some products are. When you take advantage and use this time before the Younique UK launch officially happens to immerse yourself in this company, your chances of having a successful launch from day one are pretty good.
Many of the interested founding presenters for the Younique UK launch are so motivated to have a big launch date. I’m doing all I can to create documents for them to share with their “team”, along with videos, and sharing photos of Younique’s products. I’m showing them that some of our products have more than one use.

Which Younique Products Do You Think Will Be The Most Popular In The UK?

bottle of the Younique makeup primerWe have the Glorious Primer, for example. Of course it’s an amazing primer to put on your face prior to applying makeup. It makes the eye pigments so much more vibrant, too. But did you know that you can put the Glorious primer on your hair to help with any frizzies and to give your hair extra shine?
image of the eye pigments makeup by YouniqueAnd then there’s our eye pigments. If you just use them as eye shadows, you will be in love. They are really that amazing and seem to last forever. But did you know that you can put the pigments on strands of your hair as hair chalk? Been wanting to try purple strands? Instead of paying lots at a salon, buy our regal eye pigment and apply it to your hair. Not only will you be saving tons of money, but it will wash out nicely when you don’t want it anymore.
Or buy the heartbroken eye pigment and put some of it on your lips. Add clear lip gloss on top and now you’ve created your own color for your lips! You can also add the eye pigments to clear nail polish and paint your nails. See? So much more than just eye shadow!
image of moisturizing gel bottleAnd what about our Brilliant moisturizer? That’s one of my favorite, can’t live without products. First of all, it’s just so cute in the jar it comes in. There’s just about 119 little beads in the gel and it comes with a spoon. So fancy, right?
Obviously it works great as being a moisturizer and hydrating your skin, but did you know that it’s helped some people with other issues too?
Like stretch marks, dark circles, rosacea, sun spots, and even eye swelling. (Of course it’s not marketed as a stretch mark reducer because that’s not the purpose, but what an amazing side effect of trying it on stretch marks and having it help.)
A friend of mine got too much sun one day and was hurting a little. I had her apply Brilliant moisturizing gel to her sunburn and she felt relief immediately. The burning sensation went right away and boy she was thankful for that! Another plus is that her skin didn’t peel (so gross, I know) after the sunburn went away.
Moonstruck 3D Fiber Lashes OpenAnd I wanted to save the best for last! Younique’s 3D Fiber Lashes Mascara.
The 3D Fiber Lashes have been the best-selling product and I have a feeling that it will be no different in the UK when we launch. I have many friends, family, and others I didn’t know previously continue to order from me and some even refer this product as “lash crack” because once you start using the 3D fiber lashes, you won’t stop!
All of this is helpful to the interested founding presenters of the Younique UK launch because they want to be able to move through the compensation plan as quick as they can. They have shortened their learning curve of the products and will hopefully be able to earn back their initial investment fast with this extra knowledge.
Please contact me if you're in the UK or US and are interested in becoming a founding presenter when Younique launches in your area. I’d love to add you to my group and to work closely with you when the Younique UK launch happens. I’m excited to share training information with you so that you can have a fast start and grow your business quickly. Just to give you an example…

My Younique Business Is Growing… Quickly!

Nothing happens overnight. But when things start picking up, your business can start gaining some momentum. For example, last month I reach my goal and reached the level yellow in about 2-3 days in the Younique compensation plan. Since then, I’ve set new goals and working hard to achieve them.
To show you an example, take a look at a screenshot of my inbox from this morning…
Image of my inbox showing Younique orders
I added red stars so you can see the emails from Younique. So far this morning, I’ve received 3 orders for products that I earned a commission on and there are still 12 hours left in the day!  I had two yesterday and on July 2nd, someone reached out to me who was interested in joining the Younique business opportunity. Most of the time people contact me here on my blog,FB or email..or they will just call me! But it is always nice to see notifications from Younique about someone interested in joining the business with me.
I’m working really hard on building my business and I’ve learned a lot of tips and strategies along the way to help boost business and sales. All of which I share with everyone that enrolls with me and I’m working on creating documents and more that I’ll share with my team and of course, everyone who joins my team during the Younique UK Launch.
Best of all, being a Younique Presenter, I’m having so much fun, making money, meeting incredible women, and I can easily balance my Younique business while being a busy stay-at-home mom. :)  So what are you waiting for?

Self Love/Self Acceptance, Talkology Challenge

Hello my Lovies...
Today I have an amazing Talkology/Self Love/Self Acceptance Challenge video for you guys, and the Challenge this time will not be for your body, this time  it’s going to be for your mind. In today’s video I will talk about Self Love/Self Acceptance.
The Challenge will last for a period of 7 days. It is up to you if you want to extend this challenge for an extra 7 days, but I believe that after you try this challenge for the first 7 days, you will want to do it for the rest of your life. But again, the CHOICE IS ALL YOURS!

How do people develop lack self love and self acceptance?

Obviously, as most of you already know, it starts out somewhere deep within our childhood, and then it grows like a tree, which we ourselves keep watering.  We develop certain patterns, which are usually implied to us by others, such as friends or parents. These patterns grow into beliefs, then for the rest of our lives we grow these beliefs with repetitive thinking about them and affirmations. For example thoughts and affirmations where we pick our selves apart physically. We daily focus on things we don’t like about our self physically.  We do the same thing with our personality, we assert our personality because we are told by others, that something is wrong with us and we need to fix it. Then we constantly reassure these beliefs within our self such as: I’m impatient, I’m not smart enough, I’m too straightforward, I don’t deserve what I have, I’m a drama queen, I’m too emotional etc.
We create a state of self hate for our self, and therefore we have a population of people who lack in Self Love and Acceptance.
Most of us, learn to focus mainly on things we lack and things we are NOT good at, yet we never pay as much attention to the things we are good at, and things that we do love.

How Can We Learn To Love and Accept Our Self?

First of all, whatever it is you are told by others,  you “ need to fix “ within your self, does not need fixing, because You are not broken. If you think of your self as “Broken”, then you’ll already start from a negative place. Whether it’s physical, emotional or else, DO NOT EVER LET THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS ABOUT YOU, TELL YOU WHAT IS RIGHT OR WRONG AND HOW YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T BE.
In my opinion, the way we should think about things in general is, instead of changing or fixing ourselves, LOOK FOR A WAY TO IMPROVE so it makes “YOUR” life better, but never to please someone else.
I am for example, a very straightforward person, it’s always been part of my personality, which to others can seem as I have no compassion, or that I am rude. And all my life, I was told that I need to be careful to how I speak to people and what I say to them so I don’t hurt their feelings.  Which means I have to assert my personality and push my self aside.  And all my life, I was suppressing that part of my personality because I was told to do so, so I won’t hurt people, I was afraid of speaking up  in fear of being misunderstood. But you know what...I’m done with asserting my personality, because no matter how careful I am going to be, there will always be somebody who’s feelings are going to be hurt, but not because of me, but because I am only a reflection of their own fears and insecurities. So, that got me thinking, I need to fall in love with that part of my personality, because now I understand that the reason a specific person came in contact with me, is because they need to hear things how they are, even if they are RAW and might hurt their feelings.
So, Whatever part of the personality or looks that you were born with is “Perfect” already!

Recipe For Amazing Protein Power Balls – Kids And Adults Love Them

Protein Power Balls IngredientsWant to make the perfect snack that will fuel your body with good ingredients? A snack that your kids will eat right up and then ask for more? Seriously. My boys think these are just unbaked cookies and I’ve never told him otherwise. You’re welcome, moms!
Here’s the short, sweet, and yummy recipe for this healthy snack:

Protein Power Balls

  • 2 cups Steel Cut Oats
  • 1 1/3 cup Toasted Coconut Flakes
  • ½ cup Ground Flaxseed
  • ½ cup Chia Seeds
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 cup Peanut Butter (I use unsalted organic)
  • 1 1/3 cup Honey (I use local and raw)
  • Chocolate Rice Protein Powder
Directions:
1. Toast coconut flakes in a pan on the stove.
2. Mix all ingredients in a bowl. You won’t be able to use a spoon to mix, so get ready for your hands to get very messy.
3. Put bowl in the refrigerator for 45 minutes.
4. Roll mixture into balls (slightly smaller than a golf ball).
5. Roll ball into protein powder of your choice (this step is optional).
6. Keep in refrigerator and eat as is.
7. Enjoy!
Here are a few tips that I’ve learned since making these for years now:
toasting coconut on stove1. You can’t buy toasted coconut flakes. I went to the store and asked because I didn’t know. Buy organic coconut flakes in the healthy living section of your grocery store. Put the flakes in a pan over the stove on high heat. Stir often because once they start to toast, they can burn easily. The whole process to toast coconut flakes is maybe 5 minutes.
2. It’s easier if you add the toasted coconut flakes, flaxseed, chia seeds, steel cut oats, and vanilla first. Stir Mixing the Protein Power Ballsthose with a spoon to get them mixed well. Once you add the peanut butter and honey, prepare to get a messy. You’ll need to mix everything with your hands now and it won’t be pretty. If you don’t like to get your hands messy, have your kids help you with this step. Kids love getting messy and it’s a great way to get them involved in helping you make something in the kitchen.
3. If everything looks like birdseed once it’s mixed and put into the refrigerator, Protein Power Ball In Bowlyou’re doing it right. Ha, ha. (Trust me, it’s really good!)
4. You can make the balls as big or little as you’d like. When I make them a little smaller than golf balls, I find it’s the perfect size. Plus, they fit well in my container, which makes the OCD in me very happy.
5. The balls are good on their own, but when rolled in chocolate rice protein powder, they are even better. And the chocolate taste goes along well with the story that they are really Ready to mix protein ballsunbaked cookies. You gotta do what you gotta do when it comes to kids (and husbands sometimes), right?
6. Get creative! You can also add other ingredients to the mixture: Carob chips, dried cranberries, spinach, almond butter instead of peanut butter, vanilla rice protein powder instead of chocolate, chopped nuts, etc. Just make sure you aren’t adding a ton of extra sugar and calories to the mix so it doesn’t turn this into an unhealthy snack.
7. I buy organic for all of the ingredients, but if you can’t swing it, that’s okay.
Finished Protein Power BallsThese protein balls are awesome for a pre-workout snack. They are full of energy and help to keep you going, whether it’s for a workout or just to help get you through your day. We always have them on hand at home because they are such a great snack, especially when you have kids. I do make some without the protein powder for my son to eat, too.
I hope you enjoy this yummy snack!

12 Tips To Dramatically Boost Your Energy Throughout Your Day!

Do you feel lethargic all throughout the day? Does your energy level drop and never seem to rise back up? Does the day just seem to drag on? Are you ready for a nap come 3pm every afternoon? If so, these tips are for you. Having energy throughout the day comes from many choices we make from the foods we eat, exercise, sleep, and other lifestyle choices.
Here are some tips on how to increase your energy so that you can get through your day feeling good:

1. Sleep

Sleep is so important and it’s crucial to get the same amount each and every night. You should aim for 7-8 hours of sleep in order to be fully rested. You should wake up the same time every morning, even on the weekends. If you sleep in longer on the weekends, your body’s clock gets thrown off and energy levels go down. Try to go to bed and arise at the same time every night.

2. Music

Music is just good for the soul. It goes with your mood at times, depending on how you feel and can help you recharge. If you are exercising, music can give you that extra push you need to run the last mile. If you are working, music can help boost your productivity. If you are meditating, music can help you get to the quiet and peaceful place you need to go. It’s a great energy booster when you need a pick-me-up during the day!

3. Exercise

If you feel tired, perhaps you aren’t getting in the exercise you need. Exercise is not only good for your body and maintaining your weight, but it’s great for releasing endorphins, which make you feel good. After working out, many people feel like they are on a high and that feeling stays with them throughout the day, so it’s best to exercise in the morning if you can swing it.

4. Water

Since up to 60% of our adult bodies are water, it’s imperative that we drink a lot of water during the day. It replenishes anything we sweat out, keeps us hydrated, and regulates our body temperature. When our bodies are dehydrated, we operate at a sluggish level. You should aim to drink half your body weight everyday (in fluid ounces). For example, if you weigh 140lbs, you should drink at least 70 ounces of water a day, depending on your activity level, climate, and many other factors. If you aren’t into the taste of water, try adding some strawberries, lemon, lime, cucumber, orange, or pineapple pieces to the water. It gives it a sweeter taste and you’ll find yourself reaching for more than you usually would.

5. Snacks

Think of your body as a car that needs fuel to work correctly. When you feed your body junk, it’s going to work slower and you won’t be as productive. When you feed your body healthy food, it’s such a big difference. You’ll feel better, focus better, and have more energy. You want to pick snacks like an apple and almond butter, turkey breast and string cheese, walnuts and a pear, Greek yogurt with berries, and cottage cheese with pineapple. You want your snack to be a mix of protein and fiber, with little sugar so that your blood sugar doesn’t spike.

6. Dark Chocolate

A small piece of dark chocolate can even do the trick to give you an energy boost in the middle of the day. Make sure you don’t overdo it though.

7. Vitamins

Vitamins help to replenish what our body might be lacking. Vitamin B12 is great for providing us extra energy. You can take a pill form or even get it as a shot from a doctor.
Vitamin D can also help with boosting energy, in addition to many other wonderful things like increasing bone density and helping with moods.

8. Drinking

Happy hours are fun. Having a drink in the middle of the day is nice, but it’s not so great for booting your energy. In fact, it does just the opposite. You might be on a high (or have a buzz) for a short time, but then that turns into making you feel tired and very unproductive.

9. Clothes

Have you ever noticed on a rainy day that everyone tends to dress for the yucky weather? Why not pick more cheerful and brighter colors to dress in? You will be amazed at what it does to your mood. It’s an instant pick-me-up for sure! My running shoes are 14 (yes, 14!) different colors and I love them! I get comments on how fun the colors are every time I wear them and they just make me want to lace them up and go for a run. I swear, I even run faster when I’m wearing them.
Also, take time with your appearance. When you are out and about, put a little more effort into the clothes you choose, the makeup you wear, and fixing your hair. It makes such a difference when you just feel good about yourself. You feel like you can do anything and that you are unstoppable. And a good pair of heels doesn’t hurt either, ha, ha!

10. Mid-day Yoga

Instead of reaching for a cup of coffee or an energy drink mid-afternoon, try standing up and stretching a bit. If you are at home, stretch out your spine by lying on the floor, knees folded in, and rocking back and forth. It’s a great way to release tension and give you a boost in energy. Even taking 10 deep breaths with your eyes close can revitalize you. Try it!

11. Sun

Go outside and bask in the sun for 15 minutes. The sun will give you a boost of energy due to the vitamin D. You’ll feel good and refreshed. Make sure you wear sunscreen, of course!

12. Laugh

Laughter really is the best medicine. Call up a friend or read something funny to make you laugh. It really does wonders for your mood and making you feel good. It’s also a nice way to take a break in the middle of your day.
If you tend to wake up tired and never seem to be fully awake, these tips are for you. If you do have energy up until the afternoon, try a few of the ideas above for a week and see if you notice a difference. I bet you’ll feel more energized and be ready to tackle anything that comes your way!

A Healthy Green Protein Shake

Protein shakes have been all the rage for quite some time now. It’s healthy to have for breakfast, to eat after a work out, or if you just want a refreshing snack on a cool day! Just about every morning I drink a protein shake/smoothie for breakfast. It’s fast, easy, and fills me up for many hours after until it’s lunchtime. I love it!

What do I put in my protein shake?

My must-have ingredients are: Jay Robb Vanilla Whey Protein Powder, Organic spinach leaves, 1 banana, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and cinnamon. Seriously. So. Good.
How do I make it?
My Green Shake In A BlenderI put 1 cup of my unsweetened vanilla almond milk in the blender, then add 1 spoonful of Shakeology Protein Powder OR a Whey Protein Powder of your choice and then put 2 handfuls (or more) of spinach on top (the more spinach, the better in my opinion). I blend those ingredients first to get everything all liquid-y and then I add my banana and cinnamon. Sometimes I use a frozen banana to make it more frothy, but it’s just as good using a regular banana, too. I blend again and that’s all!
If it’s a hot summer day and I’m looking to have a refreshingly cool shake, I add about 5 ice cubes in the blender to make it a little thicker in consistency. You can add more fruit to the mix too. Frozen strawberries, cherries, and blueberries are really yummy and give it a little more yumminess in the flavor department. My husband also likes to add a little peanut butter in his, which is delicious as well, especially with blueberries!
Having a shake like this is awesome if you have kids, too. Talk about healthy and teaching your children just how good something can be, even though it’s healthy. Ha, ha! My sons thinks it’s really fun to see just how green he can make his shake and I think it’s awesome to see him keep adding more and more spinach. Seriously a win-win for us both! It’s just such a healthy snack for kids (and adults) and I love to hear my son ask if he can have one. (Of course, I don’t add the protein powder in his shake, but do add all of the other ingredients.)
Green Protien Shake In A CupI’ve tried adding kale and celery to my shake in the past, but the flavor was a little too, um, earthy for my liking. (I will just stick to making kale chips instead. Now those are really, really good!)
I’ve heard some people add garlic too, but I’m guessing that’s got to be an acquired taste. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love garlic so much, but adding it in a shake just seems like it would be a bit overpowering, at least in my opinion.
If you drink a protein shake during the day, what do you put in yours? I’m always looking for more ingredients to add to make a great shake and to get in extra veggies, too!
